Iceland was at a crossroads in 1856 when the Danish authorities had suspended their monopoly on commerce in Iceland. It gave French merchants more space and freedom than before and they seemed bent on making good use of that new freedom. Their endeavor has been called Dýrafjarðarmálið in Icelandic history. In this book the author Árni Snævarr sheds new light on this event in Icelandic history and puts it in context with events happening today.
